Overview

El reinado de Isabel II supuso la instauración de un régimen liberal, en un escenario político fragmentado. Por un lado, se enfrentaron en las guerras carlistas los partidarios de mantener la monarquía absoluta del antiguo régimen y los isabelinos o cristinos (por la reina María cristina), liberales, partidarios de instaurar una monarquía parlamentaria con Isabel. Por otro lado, los mismos liberales se dividieron a causa del alcance de las reformas, y moderados y progresistas se disputaron el poder, imponiéndose los primeros en el gobierno.La crisis de este sistema liberal restringido desembocó en la Revolución de 1868, que derroco a Isabel II, implanto el sufragio universal masculino y convoco cortes constituyentes. Tras la fallida experiencia de una nueva monarquía entronizada con Amadeo de Saboya, se instauro la primera república, que intento hacer realidad un régimen plenamente democrático.
